Starting 2020 LearningUkulele.com moved to A paper sizes for all new and new editions of books, lessons, and charts.

A4 (210 x 297 mm / 8.3 x 11.7 in)

ANSI A (US Letter): (8.5 x 11 in / 216 x 279 mm)

The A Series was adopted in Europe in the 19th century, and is currently used all around the world, apart from in the USA and Canada.

Printing A4 to US Letter Size: As the sizes are relatively close, simple select Scale to Fit and it will print out fine.

Finally, learn the names of the notes of the fingerboard. Learning the notes of your instrument allows you the flexibility of not having to remember so many shapes. There are simply way too many chords, scale and notes patterns, and shapes to remember. It all comes down the notes.

Beyond knowing the names of the open strings, most players find it hard to learn the whole fingerboard. You need to know the names of the notes like it's second nature —just being able to figure them out is too slow.

If your goal is to learn the names of the notes on the fingerboard, then the Learning the Fingerboard series of books is your answer. Each book has a step-by-step approach to finally mastering the fingerboard.

Introduction

Memorizing the notes of the ukulele fingerboard is not as hard as one would think. Although there doesn’t seem to be any pattern and the same letter can be found on every string. There is a systematic approach that can be used to help remember the notes.

There are four different sized ukuleles in common use today, using any one of three different tunings.

four ukes

“C” Tuning

A ukulele can use any tuning as long as there is a string available and its construction can support the string tension when tuning to pitch.

Of the four common sizes of ukulele: the soprano, concert, and tenor ukulele can all be tuned using “C” tuning. The most common tuning currently in use is “C” tuning.

Finally, and really learning and knowing the names of the notes of the ukulele fingerboard is a liberating musical moment. A major breakthrough in most player’s learning and enjoyment of the ukulele.

Knowing the names of the notes of the fingerboard is separate from learning to read standard music notation. To learn to read music on the ukulele in “C” tuning, see my series of books and lesson: Reading Music on Ukulele.

C tuning, both low and high G variations, are common on the Soprano, Concert and Tenor ukulele. When string four, tuned to a low G, it is referred to as a Low G, C tuning.
