Aldrine Guerrero is an ukulele player from the island of Kauai. Originally from the Philippines; Aldrine takes styles of old and new, and mixes in his own formula of playful but yet mature sounds.

Michael Sussman, Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts Master Folk Artist Tradition Bearer, has been building and restoring stringed instruments on the island of Kauai, Hawaii for 40 years. Honoring tradition these ukulele`, guitars and violins are built for today. These seductive custom made Hawaiian Koa instruments possess piercing highs, a big warm midrange and a growl in the bass. With unending sustain, the sound of the Hawaiian Koa can only be described as primal as the rain forest they are born of.

Ukulele Picnic in Hawaii was founded by the renowned Japanese musician & Ukulele music scene pioneer in Japan, Kazuyuki Sekiguchi from the band Southern All Stars. From the inaugural picnic in 2009, it has attracted more than 5000 people, and has become a fun music event for whole family.

In Hawaii, the Ukulele is an important part of the history and culture. It is the instrument that many Hawaiian school children learn, and continue to play throughout their lives. Ben Chong taught himself to play the ukulele when he was about 11 years old. After nine years or so, he virtually put the ukulele away for some thirty-five years. When I met him in 1964, he was the guitarist with the Ali’is, the band that backed up Don Ho. In 2000, I invited him to be one of the four artists in “The Art of Solo ukulele”, a concert series that led to a CD and a public TV special. These events revitalized his interest in the ukulele, resulting in his album.

Bill Tapia (January 1, 1908 &ndash; December 2, 2011), known as &ldquo;Uncle Bill&rdquo; and &ldquo;Tappy&rdquo;, was an American musician, born to Portuguese parents. At age 8, Tapia was already a professional musician, playing &ldquo;Stars and Stripes Forever&rdquo; for World War I troops in Hawaii.

John (Colly) Norman was born in the late 40&rsquo;s and grew up in Coconut Grove, Miami, Florida. &ldquo;When I was 18, hanging around as a teenager in Miami, I had a friend named Skip Ruck whose brother was always in their parents&rsquo; garage building guitars. Though I never met the brother, the idea of building a musical instrument intrigued me throughout the next thirty five years of construction, custom woodworking, aviation, and other creative endeavors.&rdquo;

Bruce Shimabukuro views the ukulele as an "untapped source of music with unlimited potential. His ever expanding repertoire includes jazz, blues, funk, classical, bluegrass, folk, flamenco and rock. Countless hours of practicing and search for his own style, Bruce finally decides to produce his own first album in 2005.

"Byron Yasui" has been on the music faculty at theUniversity of Hawaii in his native Honolulu since 1972, where he teaches music theory, composition, and jazz improvisation. His experiences as a classroom instructor of 'ukulele include workshops at the Ukulele Hall of Fame Museum Expositions of 2001, 2002, and 2003 (all on the east coast), the 2004 UkeFestWest in Santa Cruz, California, the Ukulele Guild of Hawai'i" annual conventions of 2002, 2003, and 2004, countless workshops at the University of Hawai'i Windward Community College since 2002, the Aloha Music Camps of 2004 and 2005 (Molok'i), and various one day workshops on all of the Hawaiian islands since 2000. Many of these workshops were tied in with his participation as an `ukulele soloist in concerts at the various venues.

Israel “Bruddah Iz” Kamakawiwo’ole (May 20, 1959 — June 26, 1997) lived in Hawai’i until his death at the age of 38. Jake Shimabukuro was born on November 3, 1976, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Having learned to play the ukulele from the young age of four, Shimabukuro marked his professional debut in 1998 after becoming a member of the group, Pure Heart, a few years after graduating from high school. Shimabukuro&rsquo;s appearance dramatically altered traditional perceptions of ukulele music. Playing with incredible technique and great feeling, he covers all types of music from Classical music to Jazz, Rock, Blues, Funk and of course, improvisation that comes naturally to the ukulele, Shimabukuro continues to be a source of inspiration to the Hawaiian music scene.

Jody Kamisato was born and raised on the island of Oahu. Kamisato began singing with the Honolulu Boy Choir at the age of eight. As a young boy growing up in Hawaii, ukuleles were all around Kimo. My journey in ukulele building started with classes from a local Kona luthier, the late, much respected, Andy Berard. The original class was to build only a single ukulele for myself, but I found I enjoyed building them so much I kept going and soon needed to start selling them or buy a bigger house. Over the years I have evolved my own techniques but the emphasis on quality and willingness to experiment is directly descended from Andy&rsquo;s philosophy of building.

2013 - Sadly the Ukulele community lost another fine ukulele friend. I meet and hung out with Mike several times over the years at various ukulele festivals. Great gut and will e sorely missed.

The &lsquo;Ukulele is the best-known Hawaiian instrument. In the 1950&rsquo;s and 60&rsquo;s all the bands had &lsquo;ukulele players. Some of the great musicians that made the instrument very popular were: Eddie Kamae, Ohta-san, Lyle Ritz, Don Baduria, Sr., John Lukela, Jesse Kalima, Kahauanu Lake, and Peter Moon.

Peter Moon was born on the island of O&rsquo;ahu to Wook and Shay-Yung Moon. From the late 1950s through the 1960s, he gained musical inspiration, insight, and knowledge; playing as a Maile Serenader with Gabby &ldquo;Pops&rdquo; Pahinui in the 1960s. Later, in the 1970s, he also served as Gabby&rsquo;s manager. Soon after, Moon became a founding member of The Sunday Manoa, along with Palani Vaughn, Alfred &ldquo;Baby&rdquo; Kalima, and Cyril Pahinui (one of Gabby&rsquo;s sons). After Vaughan and Cyril left the group, Moon released another album (Hawaiian Time) with Alfred and another of Gabby&rsquo;s sons named Bla. After this however, Moon remained the only member and recruited the very young Robert and Roland Cazimero. In 1969, their first album, Guava Jam was released and became seen as the spark of the Hawaiian Cultural Renaissance. Two more albums were released, but personal conflicts within the group led to their eventual breakup.

My name is Dennis Lake and here you‘ll find photos and information on the Custom ‘Ukulele and Guitars I make at my home shop here on the southern slope of Mauna Loa, in the remote and rural Ka‘u District of the Big Island of Hawai‘i. This is a very small shop. I work alone, with an occasional assist from a talented friend. Since all of my instruments are individually made, and most are custom orders, each is really “one of a kind”.

Roy Sakuma credits the ukulele, a song and inspirational mentors with helping him turn his young life around after being kicked out of high school. In 1964, when he heard a hit song, &ldquo;Sushi&rdquo;, by master ukulele virtuoso Herb &ldquo;Ohta-San&rdquo; Ohta, he sought him out and became an avid student. Roy wore out the frets of his ukulele, practicing eight to 10 hours a day. At the age of 16 he set out to become the best ukulele player in the world.

I work with a variety of tonewoods, and treat each piece individually to ensure that the wood&rsquo;s voice is maximized. Living in the Islands, I have direct access to acacia koa, the precious hardwood of Hawaii. Koa trees exist naturally nowhere else on earth but Hawaii. Koa is an exceptionally beautiful wood, and for decades has been recognized as a quality tonewood. I also build with Hawaii-grown Cuban mahogany, another quality tonewood.

However Tomas&rsquo;s nephew Jerome Werner who started with the Cenizas does; under the brand name&nbsp;<a href="http://database.ukulelecorner.org.uk/x-y-z/werner-jerome" target="_blank">Valley Made</a>

At just five years of age, Taimane Gardner was given ukulele and fell in love with the instrument. At six years of age, she was called a child prodigy and won her first ukulele competition competing against boys double her age. Taimane has won numerous ukulele competitions competing against experienced adult professionals.

David Hurd, who majored in chemistry, became an oceanographer in part on a whim. His senior year, he saw his first surf movie &#8212; Bruce Brown’s Surfing Hollow Days &#8212; in McGregory, he recalls. Then he saw an ad for the brand-new department of oceanography at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. Still sniffling from his umpteenth bout with the flu and nasty colds, he thought, &#8220;There is a better life. Aloha to Chenango Valley.

This club meets at Queen Kapiolani Park in Waikiki. We meet every Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until 11;30 a.m. At the present time, there are no dues and membership is open to all non-professional players regardless of skill level, age, etc. There is a fee for those who wish to purchase the songs that are distributed at our sessions.

We play and sing many types of music. Hawaiian melodies make up about 25% of our song book.

From an early age it seemed that Weldon took a keen interest in music. His natural musical abilities were quite evident even while in elementary school where he certainly stood out amongst his classmates. In 1973, his mother took him to audition for the Honolulu Boy Choir where his singing talents were quickly recognized by director Roy Hallman. As a member of the choir, Weldon participated in performances through out Hawai&lsquo;i and extensively toured the continental US, Mexico and Canada.
