I grew up singing the songs I learned from my grandmother in Northeast Texas. I began playing the songs of the rural South on ukulele at age 11. When I was 16 my mother saved up all her Green Stamps and ordered a Kay banjo for me which I quickly re-tuned to sound like a ukulele. I worked my way through college playing and teaching music. In 1971, I moved to Austin and had a chance to play at the Checquered Flag with some of the great Texas songwriters like Alan Damron, Rusty Weir, and Shake Russell.

Have loved music and dance all my life. Enjoy all kinds of music, but my favorite is Hawaiian. I have been playing and teaching ukulele since 1985. I plunk at piano for my own amazement and have taken private and class lessons on that instrument. I am a closet percussionist and recently began playing simple tunes on harmonica. I have taken steel guitar lessons, but haven’t made time to practice. I am a songwriter and enjoy the creative process. I also dance and teach hula, which may explain why I don’t have time to practice music. ;-)

Spanky Banjo Ukes use a longer, wider concert scale length neck for easier play and a synthetic head to eliminate the problems natural skin heads have with changes in humidity. The advanced Renaissance and Fiberskyn head materials produce a mellow natural tone while maintaining plenty of banjo volume and punch.

UkesInTheClassroomTexas

Ukes in the Classroom - Texas

Ukes in the Classroom - Texas is a non-profit organization founded by Noel Tardy of UkeLady Music to teach Music Literacy - the Ukulele Way and for kids of all ages to have fun!

Music should be a core part of school curriculum. It used to be that way. Due to budget shortfalls and cuts, funding for music and arts have been drastically cut. Considering the high volume of research that confirms music helps kids learn better, it is not a prudent move by the schools. Educator Linda Cole puts it this way, “*Music and reading are both means of communicating. When children begin to learn language, it is processed in the brain first as sounds. It’s through the learning process children begin to understand what is meant by the sound and it is then translated into meanings. Music is an expression (language) of the composer as reading is music (language) created by the writer. Both are ways of communicating thought and emotion and through the learning process, music can make your child a better student.*”
