George Banjos is located in historic, scenic Somerville, Tennessee, just a few blocks away from the court square and town center. It is located just shy of midway between Memphis and Jackson.

There are no CNC routers at George Banjos. Everything is crafted by hand using rasp, file, lathe, bandsaw and sanders. Though we have tried to present different banjo "models" to give customers a starting point to order a George bnajo, we are really a custom shop and each banjo that we make is unique. Please take a moment to read about Tommy and Christian below, and then peruse the Gallery and In Progress pages to see stunning examples of the work that is created at George Banjos.

The home of Gibson electric guitars today is “Gibson USA,” built in 1974 in Nashville specifically for the production of Gibson’s Les Paul guitars. Although the entire guitar industry went through a slump in the late ’70s, the spirit of innovation remained strong at Gibson. In response to a growing demand for vintage stylings, Gibson tapped its rich history and reissued the dot-neck version of the ES-335 in 1981 and the flametop sunburst Les Paul in 1982. At the same time, two legendary guitarists joined Gibson- B.B. King in 1980 with the Lucille model and Chet Atkins in 1982 with his new concept of a solidbody acoustic guitar.

Gibson world headquarters moved to Nashville in 1984 with the closing of the Kalamazoo plant. The financially troubled company was rescued in January 1986 by Henry Juszkiewicz and David Berryman, and the new owners quickly restored Gibson’s reputation for quality as well as its profitability. Today’s Gibson electric guitars represent the history as well as the future of the electric guitar. The models whose designs have become classics-the ES-175, ES-335, Flying V, Explorer, Firebird, SGs and Les Pauls-are a testament to Gibson’s wide appeal, spanning more than four decades of music styles. Gibson’s close relationship with musicians is manifest in endorsement models from King, Atkins and jazz greats Howard Roberts and Herb Ellis, plus new Les Pauls made to the personal specifications of rock stars Jimmy Page and Joe Perry. In 1994, Gibson’s Centennial year, the new Nighthawk model won an industry award for design, setting the stage for a second hundred years of Gibson quality and innovation.

A lifelong player and woodworker, Dave Means started building stringed instruments as an avocation in 1995. He has been doing set-up and repairs for over 30 years! Since retirement from his "day job" in February, lutherie is now his full-time retirement vocation. Being a research engineer by formal training and well-grounded in acoustical theory and practice gives Dave the know-how to make your ukulele sound right.

(Ed.) - I’ve had the occasion to play Dave’s ukes over the last few years at various ukulele festivals and they are incredible.

I’ve worked with wood my entire life as a cabinet maker, finish carpenter and now a ukulele builder. My parents were both artists, making beautiful things runs deep. I strive to make the best ukuleles in both sound and sight. Goat Rock Ukulele is not a ukulele factory. I build few instruments at a time. Each ukulele is unique. I love building themed instruments that have connection to the eventual owner. I often build with recycled wood. Many woods harvested decades ago are of higher quality then is now available. I have recycled redwood from 75 year old cabernet wine tanks. It’s stained a beautiful purple from the wine. This wood will make an amazing top for a vintner themed Ukulele.

Steve Grimes has built Archtop and Double Sound hole Flatop guitars for some of the top players in the world. He specializes in custom tailoring his guitars to suit the tonal, aesthetic, and playability requirements of his customers.

Music and woodworking are two very different types of “performing” arts. Being both a woodworker and a working musician in 1972, I found myself fascinated by the prospect of combining these two professions. After studying with a violin maker and working in the instrument repair trade, I set up my own shop in Seattle, Washington, USA and began making arch top mandolins. For the first two years I made mandolins exclusively, subsidizing my new venture by doing repairs on all types of string instruments. When I was able to increase production of new instruments and get them into the hands of some good players, I was finally able to devote myself fully to building new instruments.
