I began making instruments with my dad as a means to pay off my law school loans and ended up loving it so much I decided to put a pin in me endeavors to pursue a career in environmental law and instead learn all I can from my dad in order to preserve and carry on his incredible trade. I had no idea I would enjoy making instruments for people as much as I do, but since it has become such an exciting pastime I have decided to try my hand at being a luthier. Nestled here in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, I am surround by incredibly talented musicians and instrument builders, the most talented of which being my dad, Wayne Henderson.

I make acoustic guitars and ukuleles, specializing in smaller body guitars and soprano, concert, tenor, bass, and baritone ukuleles. I am hoping to change the idea that endangered exotic woods are the only appropriate materials for a great acoustic instrument so I prefer to use local, sustainable woods such as maple, oak, ash, cherry and walnut. For tops I prefer to use Eastern European (Carpathian) spruce rather than Red spruce due to the thoughtful manner in which it is harvested and its proven track record of producing incredible soundboards for guitars and ukuleles.

Most of my instruments follow pre-war Martin patterns and forms, and are made almost completely by hand, only using basic shop machines and hand tools. Each neck is unique and shaped by hand, custom mother-of pearl inlay is sawed with a jeweler’s saw and hand inlaid, metal or wood inlay is also provided as an option.

The process of crafting many Hinkle Ukulele begins with a fallen tree. I harvest logs from trees that have come down and might otherwise become firewood. I mill planks from the logs and air-dry them for years before re-sawing the wood for ukulele parts. The parts are made and assembled in my little woodshop/music studio. Each individually crafted ukulele is then finished and set up with quality strings and tuners. The last part of the process involves a little breaking-in jam with each instrument to make sure it plays well and sounds good.

Just browsing over both books, they look fantastic! I'm a guitarist and uke player for over 25 years and was thinking about writing a ukulele book but you've already written what I think are the best, most comprehensive and thorough books I've ever seen for the instrument. I just might end up buying every book you've written and I'll be giving my highest recommendation for your books to my friends and students. Thank you so much for taking the time to write such great books!Peter Rhee
