As the strumming stroke can be either down or up. To sync your strumming with the pulse of the music, the strongest or loudest stoke will be perceived as the pulse or downbeats. Using the down stroke on the downbeats reinforces this connection.

The left and right hand on the ukulele don't always follow direction. You might need it use verbal commands for the strumming hand to follow directions and sync with the pulse of a four beat pattern. Simply say down for the down stroke and up for the up stroke. D is down and U is up.

The standard rhythmic notation for this pattern in 4/4 time is eight eighth notes, two groups of four each in a four beat measure or bar fo music:
