Standard Music Notation

A complete lesson on standard music notation.

by Curt Sheller, Curt Sheller Publications

Musical Notation - Music notation or musical notation refers to various systems of writing music. Diverse systems of musical notation have developed in various cultures. In fact, many cultures simply do not notate their music in any form. While this article attempts to present a world-view of musical notation, the dominance of western musical notation throughout most of the world inevitably results in emphasis upon this system. It should be noted that the evolution of any written musical language is akin to the evolution of the written language of speech. First comes spontaneous, unwritten expression; later comes a system of written language. Each has its merits, particularly in the realm of music. Music which is not notated can convey the natural and spontaneous aspects of the human spirit, free of preconceived parameters of rhythm and pitch. Ironically, in western music, many of today's most successful song-writers can neither read nor write music. Their compositions result from improvisation. In juxtaposition, the leading classical performers are primarily committed to written scores, since music which is notated can preserve the inspiration of some of the most profound of musical thoughts.

Rather than do a complete series of lessons on standard music notation. Why reinvent the wheel. There are lot of great resources on-line and books that already exist. Here is my take on several of the offerings.

Just browsing over both books, they look fantastic! I'm a guitarist and uke player for over 25 years and was thinking about writing a ukulele book but you've already written what I think are the best, most comprehensive and thorough books I've ever seen for the instrument. I just might end up buying every book you've written and I'll be giving my highest recommendation for your books to my friends and students. Thank you so much for taking the time to write such great books! — Peter Rhee

Aloha, Curt, All I can say is WOW! What you have accomplished is simply incredible! All the best — Glen Hirabayashi, The Aloha Boys

Folks, if you haven't stopped by Curt's site, do so right now! ..And get his books, they are fantastic. This guy knows his stuff and is able to pass it along too. — Alan Johnson Proprietor, The 4th Peg

I can highly recommend Curt's Uke books — I have four of them and they are excellent. — fatveg — Portland
